Winning the Sweepstakes Game - Featured Article
source:

Have you looked around lately? It seems that everyone is sponsoring a sweepstakes! MTV's Win the Trip of a Lifetime!, The Motley Fool's Win a $5,000 Brokerage Account Sweepstakes, Dell's BMW a-day Giveaway! How can you enter them all? Who has the time? Do you want to learn how to win the sweepstakes game and still have a life? Read on...

While winning a prize in a sweepstakes may primarily involve luck, it also involves a lot of your time. This may include: research to find the sweepstakes; analysis of the rules to enter properly; continuous follow up to enter the maximum allowed entries; and, sometimes, even tracking to find out the name of the winner when the sponsor doesn't automatically inform you. This whole process can quicky become very time-consuming and overwhelming, especially when there are so many sweepstakes available.

The first thing you need to realize is that you can't possibly enter every sweepstakes. You need to begin by concentrating your efforts on entering the sweepstakes that offer the prizes you want to win. Do not waste your time entering sweepstakes that offer prizes you are not interested in, especially as you will need to pay taxes on your winnings at the end of the year.

Secondly, find one or several sources of sweepstakes links, such as The Sweepstakes Wire, and use these to help narrow your search to the sweepstakes that appeal to you the most. The Sweepstakes Wire is categorized by daily, weekly, monthly and one-time entry sweepstakes. Once you decide which sweepstakes you want to enter, you should be sure to enter these sweepstakes the maximum allowed times in order to improve your odds.

You might be surprised to find that there are many sweepstakes available offline that you may come across during your daily routine. Carry a supply of business cards with you as local businesses often have a "business card drawing" for free prizes, services, lunches, etc. As these drawings are localized, your odds of winning may be much greater than the majority of online sweepstakes. Take advantage of their convenience by entering each one you find.

Enter a variety of sweepstakes and contests. Enter via Internet, in stores, on radio or TV, from magazines and newspapers, from The Sweepstakes Wire newsletter, from entry forms picked up at the grocery store or at a sweepstakes club, etc. If you find that you have more luck with one or two of these mediums, concentrate the majority of your efforts there.

If you really enjoy entering sweepstakes, you may want to consider making sweepstaking your hobby. While that may not help lessen the time you spend on entering, it will certainly make it less of a burden. Join a newsgroup, subscribe to newsletters, go to sweepstakes conventions, check your supermarket shelves...there are opportunities to win everywhere.

The key to winning the sweepstakes game, while minimizing the time you spend entering, is simply this: choose your online sweepstakes carefully, bookmark them so you can enter them faithfully and always enter all of the off-line sweepstakes that you encounter while going about your everyday business! So remember, all you have to do to be a winner is to enter the sweepstakes you are likely to win and have fun doing it!

Top 5 Sweepstakes Tips
source:

These sweepstakes tips may not all be new, but they are the most important "rules" or "tricks" of the trade.

  1. Follow the rules. It cannot be stressed enought that it is important to follow the official rules for the sweepstakes you are entering. If you enter multiple times in a one-time entry sweepstakes, or if you enter using multiple email addresses, you will likely be disqualified. Database "scrubs" are usually performed both before a drawing (to remove entrants who are not eligible, such as company employees and their families) and afterwards, to check if the winner followed the rules. In most drawings, alternates are chosen in case the winner is disqualified.

  2. Enter as often as you can. If a sweepstakes allows you to enter every day, then by all means, you should enter every day! Each time you enter, you are drastically increasing your odds of winning! Think about this: If 10 people enter a sweepstakes once and you enter 10 times, you have increased your odds of winning from 1:11 to 1:2 - you now have a 50% chance of winning!

  3. Bigger is not always better. Many people enter contests giving away cash, cars, and trips, while passing on the ones with smaller prizes. Since these smaller sweepstakes will likely have less entries, the odds of winning are usually much greater. Also, sweepstakes that have lots of restrictions will generally receive less entries. For example, if a sweepstakes is only open to households with children under a certain age, you should enter that more often than sweepstakes that are open to everyone. This should increase your odds of winning drastically.

  4. The first drawing usually has the best odds. Many sweepstakes with weekly or monthly drawings gain momentum as the weeks or months pass. Often, during the first week or month of a sweepstakes, there hasn't been a large media push and there are generally not a lot of entrants. Also, the first few weeks will have less entrants because many of these sweepstakes have rolling entries, which means that all entrants that are not chosen will be included in the subsequent weeks/months of the sweepstakes.

  5. Tell your friends. If a sweepstakes offers you additional entries for telling your friends, then you should tell everyone you know! If you are going to take the trouble to enter a sweepstakes in the first place, you certainly should go the extra mile to get your "free" or bonus entries! Some sweepstakes make it a little more difficult by requiring your friends to enter before awarding your sweepstakes entry. If you really want the prize, send your friend a personal email and ask them to enter.

Just remember -- while you won't win every sweepstakes you enter, if you follow these tips and enter consistently, you will greatly increase your odds of winning. Good luck!
